ESS (Eye Safety Systems) is a company that is specialized in designing and manufacturing high-quality protective eyewear for military, law enforcement, and industrial applications. One of their products is the ESS Laser Protective Lens, which is specifically designed to protect against the harmful effects of laser radiation that can cause momentary or long-term blindness, blurred-vision, dark spots in vision and headaches. Due to the increased incidents with green lasers, ESS has developed a series of Laser Protective Lenses. It is an essential piece of equipment for anyone working with lasers or in environments where laser radiation is present, such as military or industrial settings.
The ESS Laser Protective Lens is made from high-quality polycarbonate material, which provides excellent impact resistance and optical clarity. The lens features a special coating that is designed to absorb and reflect laser radiation, protecting the wearer’s eyes from damage.

The LPL-5 series protects against devices emitting lasers at the wavelength of 532nm, with an Optical Density (OD) of 2.5, meaning it blocks 99.7% of green visible lasers. This new lens is optimized for all lighting conditions and can be worn in both day and night operations with a visible light transmission (VLT) of 48%. The ESS LPL-5 lenses are available in Eyeshields and Goggles. The CrossBlade is the newest and most advanced ESS Eyeshield and is available in two sizes: Standard and NARO. These two differ in size and nosepiece to allow a customizable modular fit. NARO is more suitable for smaller faces with narrow features, while larger structured heads with wide nose bridges may be more comfortable with the Standard (STD) CrossBlade models.
How it works
The laser protective lenses block specific wavelengths that can be either visible or invisible to the naked eye. The lenses are designed to allow the most amount of visible light transmittance to pass through the lenses for operational versatility but at the same time provides the greatest OD to provide laser protection. OD stands for the Optical Density, the amount or strength that the lenses block. The higher the (OD) the more laser light is blocked, the compromise is a darker lens.
