Safran Optics 1 SLAM D: Revolutionizing Target Acquisition and Marking

In the ever-evolving field of defense technology, precision, portability, and reliability are paramount. Safran Optics 1 has consistently delivered on these fronts and the SLAM D (Small Lightweight Acquisition Marker Designator), exemplifies their commitment to excellence. SLAM D is a handheld laser acquisition marker that can also be tripod-mounted. It is the first adjustable laser designator that was designed for use by dismounted soldiers and special operations forces. It is over 30% smaller and lighter than other designators and includes an integrated imager.

Next-Generation Laser Targeting and Imaging Technology

The SLAM D is a compact, lightweight, and multifunctional device that combines the capabilities of a laser rangefinder, marker, and designator. Its primary function is to aid soldiers in accurately identifying and designating targets, enhancing situational awareness, and improving the effectiveness of precision-guided munitions.
SLAM D weighs only 3.5 pounds (1,5 kg) with internal batteries and 3.0 pounds (1,3 kg) with external power. Its small and lightweight design makes it easily portable without adding a significant burden to the soldier’s load.

SLAM D includes advanced capabilities and fills the role of multiple battlefield devices:

  • a tripod-mountable high-power designator
  • a high-power NIR pointer with a pulse feature
  • a see-spot observation device with laser spot tracking
  • PRF code counting
  • a handheld laser acquisition marker

Other advanced capabilities include laser spot acquisition, laser marking for spot target hand-off, and terminal guidance of LGB. With SLAM D users can now carry and quickly deploy a multi-role laser device for all close air support situations, regardless of the target’s range.

SLAM D: Designation, Marking and Integration

Equipped with features such as designator mode and integrated see-spot, the SLAM D stands out as a STANAG 3733 compliant laser device. It effectively fulfills the roles of long-range designation and laser-guided munitions hosting during terminal guidance operations (TGO).
One of its key advantages is the ability to program up to three different PRF (Pulse Repetition Frequency) code presets. This feature enables rapid switching between codes, ensuring seamless coordination with various close air support (CAS) aircraft. This flexibility is crucial in dynamic combat environments, where the ability to quickly adapt to different aircraft and munitions can significantly impact mission success.
Additionally, the SLAM D allows users to set PRF codes in the heat of the moment, accommodating unexpected situations, such as when an air weapons team checks in on station without prior notice.

SLAM D can be operated with a single hand, when in marker mode and conserving battery. Making SLAMD D ideal for rapid target acquisition and quick handheld laser spot handoffs during close air support (CAS) engagements. This single-handed operation is perfect for situations requiring speed and precision, allowing users to efficiently and effectively mark targets.

The ergonomic design ensures that users can rapidly mark targets with a high degree of confidence, significantly increasing the probability of a first-hit success. By enabling precise and quick laser marking, the SLAM D reduces the need for extensive voice communications, which can be time-consuming and prone to misunderstandings in the heat of battle.

The high-powered NIR pointer of the SLAM D includes laser pulse modes (2Hz, 5Hz) ideal for marking HLZ/PZ, calling out targets, coordinating fire support, and directing the device on target while using NVGs. The NIR pointer’s power output and pulse speed are easily adjustable via hotkeys on the intuitive user display.

In addition to its targeting capabilities, the SLAM D features picture capture and data storage, along with a power and data connection through the rear panel connector. This connectivity allows for various accessories, such as a remote trigger cable for steady tripod designation, an external power cable for use with CWBs, and a data cable for downloading images to an end-user device. These functionalities support battlefield damage assessments and after-action reporting, enhancing the device’s utility in both operational and post-mission contexts.

Advanced Laser Detection and Visualization for Enhanced Battlefield Precision

SLAM D’s high-performance ALPD SWIR camera core is designed to detect, track, and bracket laser energy, simultaneously deciphering up to three laser PRF codes. This advanced capability ensures precise target identification and engagement, even in complex combat scenarios. The integrated thermo-electric cooler further enhances the camera’s performance, providing unmatched sensitivity and exceptional low-light operation in any environment. This results in a high-fidelity view of the target area, ensuring that users can maintain situational awareness and accuracy.

The SLAM D’s intuitive display allows users to detect and visualize various types of battlefield lasers, eliminating the need for additional see-spot accessories. This not only reduces the burden on the operator but also cuts down on the overall cost of equipment. The user-friendly interface and robust visualization capabilities ensure that soldiers can efficiently and effectively manage laser targeting tasks without the complexity of extra gear.
